The Modjeska Simkins School was launched in 2015 to teach South Carolinians the true history of their state. Named in honor of human rights activist Modjeska Monteith Simkins, the school offers students an experience they cannot get anywhere else.
They learn about their own roles as citizens and as potential activists. In the process, they engage in a form of participatory education that echoes the traditions of the Freedom Schools of Mississippi in the 1960s and Simkins’ own leadership training school in the 1940s.
The Spring 2024 session runs March 2–June 22 online and at GROW in Columbia.
The school is a project of the SC Progressive Network, located at GROW, 1340 Elmwood Ave. in downtown Columbia, SC.
